Review
Virology in an understandable manner
Well, let's see, molecular virology is definitely a hard-to understand science. Fortunately, for begginers like me, A.J Cann wrote this book. I think it is an awesome one, but it has its drawbacks.
Pros: Easy to read ( i mean, critical concepts, especially genetics, come up very clearly ), relatively easy to understand, and final review questions that really stick concepts in your mind. Also excellent prospective view about why molecular virology is important.
Cons: Not enough pictures. Imagination is a useful tool, but not that much ! This is why this superb book deserves only 4 stars. Still, it is worth the money, and belongs to the shelf of every virologist or infectious disease expert/fan/student

Virology is that branch of microbiology concerned with viruses and diseases. These groups of minute infectious agents are, with certain exceptions (e.g., poxviruses) lack an independent metabolism and replicate only within living host cells. Clinical microbiologists are engaged in the field of diagnostic microbiology to determine whether pathogenic microorganisms are present in clinical specimens collected from patients with suspected infections. If microorganisms are found, these are identified and susceptibility profiles, when indicated, are determined. During the past two decades, technical advances in the field of diagnostic microbiology have made constant and enormous progress in various areas, including bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, parasitology, and virology. The diagnostic capabilities of modern clinical microbiology laboratories have improved rapidly and have expanded greatly due to a technological revolution in molecular aspects of microbiology and immunology. In particular, rapid techniques for nucleic acid amplification and characterization combined with automation and user-friendly software have significantly broadened the diagnostic arsenal for the clinical microbiologist. The conventional diagnostic model for clinical microbiology has been labor-intensive and frequently required days to weeks before test results were available. Advanced Techniques in Diagnostic Microbiology provides a comprehensive and up-to-date description of advanced methods that have evolved for the diagnosis of infectious diseases in the routine clinical microbiology laboratory. The book is divided into two sections. The first techniques section covers the principles and characteristics of techniques ranging from rapid antigen testing, to advanced antibody detection, to in vitro nucleic acid amplification techniques, and to nucleic acid microarray and mass spectrometry. Sufficient space is assigned to cover different nucleic acid amplification formats that are currently being used widely in the diagnostic microbiology field. Within each technique, examples are given regarding its application in the diagnostic field. Commercial product information, if available, is introduced with commentary in each chapter. If several test formats are available for a technique, objective comparisons are given to illustrate the contrasts of their advantages and disadvantages. The second applications section provides practical examples of application of these advanced techniques in several "hot" spots in the diagnostic field. The editors and the over 250 expert contributors to this encyclopedia are to be commended for the fantastic work they have done in producing a resource that is valuable to both undergraduates and specialists. The encyclopedia features 270 alphabetically arranged articles discussing topics that range from specific viruses and virus groups to diagnostic techniques and the history of virology. Animal, insect, plant, and bacteriologial viruses are all covered. Each entry includes a self-contained summary of the topic at hand and provides both recommendations for further reading and a list of other relevant entries. Many of the articles have a section on future perspectives that shows the direction of current research. In addition, there are cross references and an extensive index. While expensive, this encyclopedia is the only comprehensive work on virology to have appeared in the past few years. The field is changing so quickly that finding concise, understandable information in a single source is difficult. Other current works include Bernard Fields's Fields Virology (Raven, 1990. 2d ed.) and Fundamental Virology (Raven, 1991). (Fields is a contributor to this volume as well.)
